I don’t really celebrate Purim anymore (that’ll probably change once Finn is old enough to “get it” and dress up), but I live for hamentaschen season. Since we were going to be in Savannah, I went to Michaeli Bakery to pick up a bunch that we could share as a family. I hadn’t been to the Israeli Bakery yet but had heard great things – and heard they make the top hamentaschen in the city. I wasn’t the only one who’d heard that because I was one of 10 people in line at 12:45 the Thursday before Purim waiting anxiously for a fresh batch to come out of the oven.

I got 2 strawberry, 2 [special] plum galette, 2 apple date, 1 halva, and 1 chocolate. All of them were absolutely delicious. The plum galette truly tasted like a plum galette in mini form (vs. a plum galette flavor hamentaschen) but with not-dry crust. I was surprised to realize I really liked the halva, which my mom thoguht tasted like peanut butter. But perhaps my favorite was the apple date. It was everything a hamentaschen should be with textured filling (almost a compote) and a perfect dough to filling ratio. You couldn’t necessarily say “that’s date!” – and that’s a good thing. It just rounded out the flavor perfectly. As my Mom says, “it’s all about the dough” and this dough is perfect.

I was on a mission for hamentaschen this time, but I’ll need to go back to try some of their other items. The chocolate caramel cookie and rugalach both looked incredible (and would be great to bring to someone’s house) and all the burekas were making my mouth water. I love love love a good bureka. Note: I’m not sure about LES, but the UES location doesn’t have a spot to sit. Not ideal for lounging but perfect for a breakfast on the go.
